  • Turning the light around

Hello friends, today I would like to talk about the heart of Chinese inner alchemy and a process called "turning the light around." This specific phrase comes from the ancient Chinese meditation manual called The Secret of the Golden Flower, but is also found in different terms in other ancient texts. The process itself is simple, but explaining how and why it works takes a little bit of work, so I am just going to jump right in and do my best. First, there are three dantien, an upper dantien inside the center of the head, a middle dantien in the center of the chest, and a lower dantien just below the belly button. These are energy generation and storage areas in the body. Today we're just going to look at the upper and lower dantien. Each of the three dantien contain a specific type of energy, jing is in the lower dantien, chi in the middle dantien, and shen in the upper dantien. So let's talk about shen.

What this process does, is it causes shen to travel down to the lower dantien. Shen is the energy of the mind. It is a force, subtle, but as real as electricity. Every moment of every day when you are awake, shen is projecting out of the head like beams of light. This is shown in the first image. The old texts say that "shen rides the eyes out." When the Secret of the Golden Flower speaks of "light" this is referring to shen. It is called light because it projects outward like beams of light from the upper dantien. When the light is "turned around," it stops projecting outward and falls down to the lower dantien as you can see in the second picture. (Forgive the crude illustrations, I am working with chatgpt to get them a little better, but you can see what I am going for.)

The basic concept is this. The energy of your mind and thoughts is a literal force, and it constantly moves outward when you look at things, or even think. And it even projects outward when you dream. The only time it flows downward is during dreamless sleep, when the mind and internal chatter completely stops. This downward flow happens to everyone, but they are never conscious of it because it happens naturally in dreamless sleep. At some point in history the Chinese became aware of this natural process and figured out how to cause it to happen while fully awake.

So how do you do it, and what is it used for? Its purpose is to revitalize the energy of the body. Have you ever awakened from deep sleep and felt strangely good in a way that was hard to describe? You realized that you felt strangely refreshed, and couldn't explain why? That is because you slept deeply enough for the mind to shut down and the energy in the head to drop down to the lower dantien. Now, this process has far reaching effects when done correctly, and can lead to the ability to become immortal, first on a spiritual level and possibly even on a physical level if you believe the Chinese, and storing energy in the lower dantien can lead to the ability to "fa chi," to project energy from the hands.

There is a lot more to be said here, and its difficult to explain everything in one post, but let's look briefly at the method. You must concentrate on something called the "mysterious pass." This can be located in several places, the most common being the point between the eyebrows, the center of the forehead, or "resting the awareness behind the eyes." When this is done correctly, the outward rays of shen or "light" will be caused to stop projecting outward and naturally fall down to the lower dantien. You will know you are getting it when the body immediately and naturally changes its breathing pattern. This is called "the body breathes itself." The breath will slow down so quickly and drastically that it seems to almost stop. You don't have to force this, the body will do it naturally when you get it right. I have experienced this phenomenon dozens and dozens of times now, and perceived a variety of paranormal phenomena as a result of this process. I could go on much further, but here I am just trying to introduce you to the concept of turning the light around, which is the heart of Neidan, Chinese inner alchemy.
